Choosing a duck call or calls can be difficult for the beginner. When I started duck hunting I had no idea on what call to start with. I went in to a local outdoors store and looked around for a bit and ended up asking someone working there what I should start with. This is always a good idea because most outdoors stores have qualified people to answer questions such as this.
I suggest that a beginner should start out with a poly double reed. They are much easier to blow than a single reed, and reproduce real duck sounds. I also suggest buying a "how to" DVD on duck calling. This way you can watch what a pro is doing and replicate it. These videos show you which calling sequences to use for different situations. Pay attention to this part and use it in a real situation in the field.
Once you have your call picked out and an idea of what to do, just keep on practicing. I blow my calls in my house, out in the yard (some neighbors might not like this one), in my truck, really just anywhere and anytime. Once you get down the right sound just keep on it. Practice, practice, and practice some more.
All of this practice will pay off in the field. There is just something amazing about tricking a real duck in to thinking you are one of them. You will never forget the first time a duck or flock of ducks are flying by your spread. You grab your call, and give them a few quacks which turns them and sucks them in to your decoys. It's a very unique feeling that brings a hunter closer to Mother Nature, in my eyes.

SINGLE REED OR DOUBLE REED, YOU MAKE THE CALL
Hey fellow junkies, during the off season are the perfect time to try different calls and see what’s out there. There are so many different call makers who all add their own experience, craftsmanship and art to the process that I love looking and trying as many of them as I can. Here is a couple that I have tried out lately:
I am usually not a big fan of single reed duck calls only because I feel that double reeds make me sound more like a duck. You may agree or disagree but that is what makes experimenting fun! Recently I tried a single reed call BLITZKRIEG CALLS out of Iowa. A well crafted wood call with a unique camo band and beautiful golden yellow wood grain. This easy blowing call has a great feeding chuckle that does not fade at the end but stays strong with little air pressure. Check them out at www.jagermisteroutfitters.com
The latest double-reed I have recently tried is made by Hayes Calls from Illinois. www.hayescalls.com The Deadly Timber is a cool looking acrylic call, black with green in-lay and orange band. A raspy easy blowing call, it has a lower volume than some similar calls I have tried and also, is extremely easy to blow. Whether you are a single or double reed fan, or both, you might want to give these two extremely economical calls a try. Either or both of these calls should have the ducks cupping their wings and coming right to you. You make the call!

C and C Calls review
ill try any call once is what put me in touch with C and C calls and i havent been disapointed since and once again they impress. i was so impressed with there goose call i first picked up. The tonal options are all over the map. It takes almost no air to break it over which makes it easy to keep the volume low almost a whisper! but punch a little more air through it and birds in the next town will head your way. the sound is nothing but goose. the guts are the best i have seen in awhile there truly what i would call field guts you cant out blow them and field cleaning and re tunning this call take seconds thanks to the reed locking in place. All of there calls are hand turned out of polymer and are tuly bullet proof. They currently make a goose and a duck that they offer in a combo or each seperate. There duck call sounds just as good as the goose and it can get loud! its got a tone hole in the insert and just sounds like it should have a set of wings and a little green head!
C and C calls is truly a great company to work with that puts there love for the sport in every call they make and its shows every time you blow one of there calls. they stand behind everything they make and are always there to help. If anyone is interested in knowing more about them or wants to pick up a call let me know ill put you in touch with them they will ship from here to the UK litteraly!
