Is hunting good for kids?
Behavioral scientist weighs in at upcoming O.F.A.H. Fish & Wildlife Conference

Attention: Agriculture Editor, Assignment Editor, Education Editor, Environment Editor, Sports Editor

ON, O.F.A.H. MEDIA ADVISORY/INVITATION --(Marketwire - March 11, 2010) - Dr. Randall Eaton is an internationally known behavioral scientist who has studied large predators, predation and hunting since 1966. His conclusion? Hunting is good for kids, particularly for adolescent males.

Dr. Eaton, who has written/edited over a dozen books and produced several award winning documentaries, will be in Mississauga next week to address members of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) during the 82nd O.F.A.H. Fish and Wildlife Conference. The event features a series of presenters on topics of interest and concern to anglers and hunters, and draws approximately 500 attendees annually.

From Boys to Men of Heart - Hunting as Rite of Passage is the title of Dr. Eaton's latest book. In it, Eaton presents compelling evidence from several disciplines that adolescent males need rites of passage to become responsible adults.

Dr. Eaton has served on the faculties of zoology, psychology, wildlife and humanities of several universities including University of Washington and University of Georgia. He has lectured on over 60 campuses in North America. In 2000 he was named "Conservationist Lecturer of the Year" at North Carolina State, and in 2002 was "Distinguished Visiting Scholar" at the University of Alberta, where he became an adjunct faculty member.

The Media are invited to attend the 82nd O.F.A.H. Fish & Wildlife Conference in its entirety, or for Dr Eaton's presentation. They are also invited to contact the O.F.A.H. to schedule an interview with Dr. Eaton while he is in Ontario at the conference.

California Turkey Hunt

Hello Fellow DuckJunkies,
After an awesome waterfowl hunt this year, you always look forward to the next year and apply the things that you learn. For me, as I put away my duck decoys and hang my waders up, all I can think about is Spring Turkey. I was introduced to turkey hunting about 6 years ago. I have to say, If I was not a die hard duck hunter, this would be my #1 passion. March 27th cannot get here soon enough as that marks the beginning of the California Spring Turkey season. The thing I enjoy the most while turkey hunting is having that "moment" with a mature Tom. The moment he responds to your hen call, its on. I love being able to interact with him and almost be able to have a converstation with him. The first Tom I was able to bag was in my first season. I was a novice caller, but what I did seemed to work. Once I worked him into the decoys, I was fortunate enough to have him hang around. I had an easy shot, but was rather taken back at him parading around, his face changing colors, and stomping his feet. This was what being a sportsman was all about. Being in "their" environment, "their" territory. I had to hold my father in law back a few times from shooting as I just wanted to talk to him and watch him. Any true sportsmen and outdoorsmen that has hunted turkeys knows what this feels like. I hope my luck this year has been as good as it has in the past.

I have been scouting new spots as I always like to venture out of my comfort zone and try new areas. If there are any DuckJunkies that are in Northern California, and would like to go out turkey hunting, let me know. Even if you have never went, I have the gear, lets go.

Hope to talk to you all soon.

Spring Snow Goose Hunt

Here in Pennsylvania, we are about midway through our Spring Snow Goose Conservation Season. With the warmer temperatures finally melting the snow on the ground, snow geese have finally been migrating up from the south in large numbers. During my daily scouting routine, I have seen snow goose numbers go from about 5,000 birds up to 45,000 or so over the past 10 days. With those kind of numbers in the area, myself and a few good friends decided to team up and put out a nice size decoy spread in hopes of getting a tornado of snows to touch down on us. We put out close to 1,100 decoys, about 800 sillosocks and 300 or so rags, and also had 2 e-callers running. Hopes were high as the sun came up as everything about the morning just seemed perfect. At last here they came....just when we expected them. Wave after wave of snow geese just filled the sky around us. Within minutes we were surrounded just waiting for the first birds to get within range. Well those minutes turned out to be hours as the last of the flocks flew out of sight. Seven hunters and only one bird to show for, yep I can hear the laughter. We had three hours of sky filled action but couldn't get more than one bird to get within range. What did we do wrong? I know, the list could be endless, but we will never know. In the end, we didn't leave with much meat, but all seven of us have a memory that will last a lifetime of snow goose tornado's and their high pitched barks.

BIG FOOT DECOYS

Hello fellow junkies. Just got back from a visit to the Big Foot decoy factory in Clinton, Iowa. It was crazy there today as hundreds of blue geese were being painted and shipped all over the country! Art Ladehoff has a very simple and highly functional factory. He does one thing and does it well. He makes the worlds best decoys. Added to the famous Canada goose decoys including full bodies, floaters and the new shells are also field mallards and floating mallards as well. What you might not know is that Big Foot sells a ton of speckled belly full bodies as well as blue and snow geese. There were literally thousands of boxes being ready to be shipped while I was there. I watched part of the painting process, the packing and even some assembly. For you fellow BigFoot fans, a new web site is in the works as well as some other surprises.

Snow geese

Lots of snow geese in the Twin Falls Area today. We hunted up there and also Northern Utah this last weekend. When we finally got a flock to come into us it was over 10000 birds. Shoot fast and accurate! My 3 shells landed me 7 birds. We had 4 shooters total that killed 25 birds. Snow geese and lesser snow geese along with a lot of Ross geese. No fat hardly found on any of the birds. Also they where smaller in size than the others taken last year. With the overpopulation in Canada and Alaska Tundra you can sure tell they are struggling. Rumor has it that Canada is going to "gas" nesting grounds this year to reduce the population. I would sure rather hunt them if that the case. I will be going out for the last day this week also. Hope it goes well!!!
