Electronic Dog Collars

So the other day I bought a Electric Collar for my yellow lab. I didn't get it to train him anything new, i got it to reinforce the stuff he already new. When i first put it on him he didn't understand what the beeping noise meant or where the shocking feeling was coming from. As the days went by he started to understand what everything meant and now I don't even have to turn it on or put it on him and he listen a whole heck of alot better. So i was visiting my grandparents the other day and i had him with me and he had his collar on him. When grandpa asked what that was i told him he got mad and took it off of him. So i guess my point is, whats your opinion on the Electronic Collars? Are they inhuman or no?

A shock collar for a dog is a good training tool if it is used the right way. First of all I would make sure I had all the basics covered to begin with. That is heal, stay, and sit on command. Next I would use the beep only function on the collar after they know that if they get beeped and don't listen a shock will quickly follow. I wouldn't go around shocking the heck out of the dog, that will accomplish nothing. So it's how you use this collar as a training aid. They aren't inhumane as long as you find the lowest setting that gets a reaction from the dog without sending him yelping or jumping. Start on the lowest power and move up. Never use a high shock power if you don't have to. In the end if properly used they can be a great aid.

Personally I don't like them simply for the fact that most people get them thinking it's a quick fix to a problem they caused in poor training, I have 8 chocolate labs, all house dogs and hunting dogs They are well trained and well mannered with no shock collar, remember the famous words of Mr. Miagi NEVER BAD STUDENT ALWAYS BAD TEACHER. I want my dogs to obey me because that is what they love to do not because they fear me. JMO
